Aim of this study was the estimation of the prevalence of tinnitus in 7 y.o. children in Poland in the course of a hearing screening program conducted in small towns and villages. Material included 118,005 children who were asked about tinnitus by the researcher at school during the screening examination; their parents completed the questionnaire at home. Results: 12.9% of parents stated that their children reported signs of tinnitus and 29,25% of children confirmed having tinnitus after being directly asked about it. Children with a hearing loss reported tinnitus more frequently than those with the normal hearing. Conclusion is that tinnitus is found in a large proportion of 7-year olds. It is therefore recommendable to include questions about the presence of tinnitus in questionnaires used in hearing screening tests performed at primary schools.
