Introduction of Cultivated Artichoke Accessions into Breeding Program in Moscow Region

Introduction of new crops and extension of the assortment of vegetables are important tasks of breeding programs in Russia. Ten accessions of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) were tested during three years (2005-2008) under the condition of Moscow region. The high variability between accessions of artichoke was recorded for many traits related to growth and development of plant. According to the test results, the sources of early ripeness, short-growing, green and violent color of the head were selected. Out of the ten accessions tested, the Vp-48 ('Green Globe') was the most promising for yield, early ripeness, and optimal habit for cultivation in the condition of temperate climate of Russia.
