The following study reports on the cell-biological profile of cells cultured on titanium structures whose surfaces topographies were CAD micro-structured and directly manufactured with the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process. Human osteoblast-like MG-63 and SaOS-2 cells which are known to be sensitive to structural features were assessed for cell viability, proliferation and differentiation when cultured on three designed surface microstructures. Based on cell viability, as well as the production of bone specific biomarkers like transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), osteocalcin, prostaglandin E_2 (PGE_2) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), it was found that the biological profiles are cell-line specific, and depend on the titanium surface topography. SLM shows potential for the manufacture of customized titanium implants with surface topographies that are compatible with specific cell types.
