Formal education, in most developing or developed countries, starts at the the age of 5 with a year of preschool education. This year of preparation is usually based on a curriculum that targets basic math and reading skills. The extent and level of detail of the curriculum shows huge differences from country to country. In some countries, books and special materials are available, meanwhile in others the curriculum consists of a few lines of instructions with no mention of how to carry them out. Still, the last few years have wit-nessed a rapidly increasing interest in formal education of the youngest.
