Bac2 Ltd has developed a novel latent acid system for use in the production of advanced carbon composite bipolar plates, components used in fuel cell stacks. The latent-catalyst allows storage stable moulding compounds containing highly reactive acid phenolic and furan based polymer binders. The catalyst, prefixed CSR, enables a moulding compound containing resin, catalyst and filler to be mixed, packaged, shipped and stored ready for use for up to 12 months after production. Bipolar plates are key components in a fuel cell stack and make up about 80% of the total weight. For volume production of fuel cells, moulding of graphite composite bipolar plates will be one of the main manufacturing methods. The latent catalyst has also been used to develop a storage stable glass filled phenolic BMC.
