Learnings from CO_2 Miscible Floods Provides Design Guidelines for CO_2 Sequestration

Ten years of experience in the design and operation of CO_2 miscible flood projects has generated a wealth of information related to the operation and design of these facilities. Much of this experience is directly related to CO_2 capture and sequestration (CCS) projects. A summary of the design guidelines and lessons learned from CO_2 miscible flood surface facilities are presented along with how these design guidelines are applicable to CO_2 sequestration. The areas covered will include ballpark capital cost estimation for CO_2 compression/ dehydration/ pipelines, unique proper-ties of dense phase CO_2, dehydration of CO_2, materials selection, fugitive emission of H_2S and mercaptans, and the safety hazards of handling CO_2. The information presented is drawn from Hatch Energy's experience in the Encana Weyburn CO_2 miscible flood and Apache Midale CO_2 miscible flood projects in Saskatchewan, Canada.
