A current controlled driver for a DielectricBarrier Discharge (DBD) lamp is proposed in this paper asopposed to most of the published drivers which are voltagecontrolled drivers. The design of this driver is intendedto enhance the electrical to optical efficiency of the lampand therefore enhancing the overall efficiency of the system.The driver topology permits direct control of the peaklamp current and the operating frequency of the suppliedcurrent to the DBD lamp. The width of the current pulses isdetermined by the transformer magnetizing inductance andthe lamp capacitance. Experimental results of the proposeddriver connected to a XeCI DBD lamp are presented tovalidate the performance of the driver and to prove theconcept of such a current controlled driver.
