An innovative approach for binding Yb ions to the surface of Si nanocrystals (SiNC), based on the aptitude of Yb to form complexes with amino groups, was developed. SiNC produced by laser pyrolysis, with sizes ranging from 6 to 8 nm, were first functionalised with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and then doped with Yb(III). The Yb-doped SiNC showed sharp PL (Photo-Luminescence) emission peaks at wavelengths around 1 pm. Chemical reactions were performed by using different SiNC/Yb ratios, and it was found that the PL emission intensity increased as the amount of Yb increased
