Stress wave propagation and impact energy absorption in 3D textile composites and Aluminum

The impact behaviors of circular plates of two kinds of 3D textile composites and Aluminum are compared to discuss the difference of impact damage mechanisms between the 3D textile composites and isotiopic homogeneous material. The impact load-displacement curves at different impact velocities of the composite materials and Aluminum were obtained to analyze the stress wave propagation. The finite element results of the impact damage were also presented for comparison. It is shown that the 3d textile composites have resin crack, fiber breakage and complicated stress wave propagation phenomena, while only elasto-plasn'c deformation has been found in Aluminum.
