Commercial forestry in New Zealand, has, for the first time in decades, become politically relevant. Unlike most other sectors, its relevance is not a result of its lobbying power or size of its voting constituency. It comes from the importance to NZpoliticians and our economy of being seen to be part of the international fight against global warming.Politicians and academics understand very well that if New Zealand is to get anywhere near its stated target of 1.0%-20% below 1990 emission levels by 2020, we need more forests planted.
