Case Study of 'M' Field Water Injection : Identifying and Managing the Challenges

'M' Field was developed in 2007 and water injection is required since beginning to enhance field's recovery factor. The offshore field was developed with 24 strings of oil producers, 8 strings of water injectors and 2 strings of gas producer. However, as a result of delay in Water Injection Module commissioning, water injection was only started 2 years after first oil production. Immediately after 'M' Field started its water injection in 2009, a continuous decline in injectivity was observed although the injection water met all the required quality specification. This paper will discuss the problems faced, the actions taken to solve the problems, the successes and failures of the actions taken, as well as potential improvement measures. Among the challenges faced includes well completion and sand control design, well integrity, bacteria issues and water hammer effect to the injectors. Various diagnostics which had been applied to mitigate the issues will also be discussed. The various actions taken include acidisation, biocide injection, technical performance review of water injection system and prioritization of injection wells. This paper will also share the team's efforts in term of short and long term strategy to improve the wells injectivity through better coordination between various stakeholders. Future fields with water injection will benefit from this paper's discussion on challenges faced in water injection.
