Since the introduction of LED in automotive lighting, many actors in the field have been dreaming about what is often considered as being one of the big advantages of the technology: the possibility to perform an adaptable beam pattern without any mechanical movement. This could go from simple bending light with progressive power up of several LEDs to full Adaptive Driving Beam for which the beam pattern is composed of several pixels, which are switched 'on' or 'off' upon the presence and location of other road users, detected by a camera system. Several concepts and mockups have been described, but until now none of them is fully satisfying due to poor performances and high cost. Many lighting experts consider that such an approach may not come to industrial level before several years. At the same time, different solutions have been proposed to perform Adaptive Driving Beam using a single Xenon source. How could we now propose high performances lighting, with Adaptive Driving Beam, with a Xenon source and not propose the same level of performances with LED sources? The target of this paper is then to present a status of the different solutions for ADB with LED, from direct adaptation of Xenon solutions to full digital beam, to show the different benefits, drawbacks and risks of these solutions, as well as to show our visibility for market introduction.
