The Regulators View for the Successful Research Reactor Decommissioning

In 2007, responsibility for regulatory oversight and project management of research and test reactor (RTR) decommissioning was transferred from the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to the Office of Federal and State Material Safety and Environmental Protection, Division of Waste Management and Environmental Protection, Reactor Decommissioning Branch (RDB). Since 1996, NUREG 1537, Standard Review Plan for Research Reactors has provided the guidance for the development of decommissioning plans (DPs) for submittal for NRC approval. This guidance provides a reasonable framework for the required content for the RTR DPs, with more detailed information in NUREG 1757, Consolidated Decommissioning Guidance.
