About 400 units of rotating zigzag bed (RZB) have been used in industrial distillation process. These successful applications fully demonstrated its advantages such as high gas-liquid mass transfer rate and small size. There will also be broad prospects of RZB applied in waste water treatment process. In this paper a preliminary attempt was made to study ammonia nitrogen removal from industrial waste water by RZB before emission. Firstly, stripping experiments were carried out to remove ammonia nitrogen from the waste water containing ammonia and ammonium sulfate in a small single-rotor RZB, obtaining ammonia solution with a proper concentration. Secondly, a unit of industrial-scale three-rotor RZB with outer diameter of 750mm was designed based on experimental data and used to treat ammonium sulfate solution with 2% ammonia nitrogen. The industrial results showed that the feed capacity was greater than 1500 kg/hr, ammonia concentration in the bottom was less than 30 mg/L, and aqua ammonia concentration in the top was greater than 25%.
