A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is usually operated at the temperature of 50-80 °C. The operating temperature affects the water content in the proton exchange membrane and its conductivity. When the relative humidity of reactant gases is too low, the membrane will be dehydrated, resulting in low conductivity and low cell performance. Thus, water and heat managements are two important issues in operating a PEMFC. Both water and heat managements are related to the temperature within a PEMFC. In order to ensure the PEMFC operated at a proper temperature, it is necessary to understand the relationship between cell temperature and the working conditions of the fuel cell.
