The biggest roadblocks and most important factors when considering a cathode catalyst for automotive commercialization are cost and durability over the lifetime of a fuel cell vehicle. The cathode catalyst has been a focus of interest for many years, due to the influence it has over the entire automotive fuel cell system. At Ford Motor Company, along with our fuel cell catalyst research partners the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC) and Daimler, cathode catalyst materials are advancing through basic and applied research on thin-film Pt and Pt alloys, ceramic supports, and graphitic substrates.
