Use of PEM fuel cells with tri-generation to achieve load following capability

Tri-generation is a rapidly developing technology which permits fuel cells to convert and provide energy. The best known example of tri-generation is in operation in Fountain Valley, California. The feedstock is methane produced by anaerobic digestion at the Fountain Valley Water Treatment Plant. A 300 kW FuelCell Energy molten carbonate fuel cell operates by consuming the methane and producing electricity, hydrogen and heat. Current Tri-generation systems do not have load following or peaking capability.
