The Origin of Massive Galaxies in Groups and Isolated: Law and Chance from Cosmological Simulations

Isolated galaxies and groups of galaxies have been identified in a cosmological simulation at z = 0, as well as their progenitors at higher zs. We discuss the physical processes underlying their assembly and in particular the role law and chance could have played.
