Wax refers to the class of hydrocarbons that are malleable at normal ambient temperatures. Typically, they melt above 45 °C (113 °F) to give a low viscosity liquid. They are complex materials containing mainly straight chain, branched and cyclo alkanes. Waxes are extensively used in the adhesive and coating industry and as additives to inks and rubber components in many product areas. Refined waxes are components of fossil fuels or are synthesized from petroleum-derived compounds. Synthetic waxes are produced from processes such as polimerization of a-olefins and Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis.
