Structural Evaluation of Large Liquefied Gas Carriers with Independent Tanks - A Classification Perspective

An increasing number of large liquefied gas carriers (LLGC) with independent tanks are being designed and constructed in response to market-driven demands for efficient sea-borne transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas (LNG) cargoes. At the same time, the concept of independent tanks which originated in the shipping industry is also being adopted for large offshore gas production units. In support of its provision of classification services for these high value assets, ABS has developed a set of rationally-based criteria for evaluation of the hull and independent tank structures, as well as the cargo tank locking system. This paper presents the technical background of the said criteria in the interests of sharing experience and documenting for wider professional use the related details.
