摘要

A nondestructive test technique has been identified which has the potential for being an inspection tool for surveying shipboard liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks. The technique is called Internal Friction Damping Nondestructive Evaluation (IFD-NDE). The physical property that is monitored in this technique is the rate at which an energy impulse imparted to a material or structure decays due to the internal friction of the material. A change in the rate of decay reflects changes in the basic chemical and/or mechanical properties of the material. This report details the application of this technique from laboratory testing of bar specimens to testing of field structures analogous to LNG tanks.
