A key part of evaluation of the ship ultimate capacity employing the Smith method is the correct formulation of the stress-strain relationships of structural elements - longitudinally and transversally stiffened panels - subject to various loadings acting on their edges. Tensile, compressive and shear loading of the panel edge is an effect of distribution of the stresses due to the internal forces acting in the ship hull. Evaluation of the stress-strain relationships in the finite element method calls for relatively large models which require significant computational effort. In the paper, a model is presented for evaluation of the stress-strain relationship for the stiffened panel subject to tension, compression and shear within the frame of the finite element method. The model is an extension of the finite element method for the analysis of stiffened plates into the non-linear range. Presented are also the results of analysis for a typical ship panel.
