'Coin' tapping with a small hammer has traditionally been used to identity flaws in bonded structure. Detection depends on the differences in sound between normal and debonded parts. This method relies on personal skills that take a long time to acquire & are indispensable for interpretation of results. Dependency on human senses, means detection is difficult in noisy environments & is impossible to continue with satisfactory accuracy over long periods of time. The inspector becomes used to unusual sounds or simply tired.
