Inhibition of Algae Growth in a Sight Pondwith Ultraviolet Irradiation

Ultraviolet technology was tried here to apply for inhibiting algae growth. A city sight pond in southern China with the water surface area of 1,500 m2 and average depth of 1.5 meter, was taken as the test target. After irradiation treatment for 40 hours, the total algae number was lowered down to 3.3 X 107 cells/L from 7.8 X 108 cells/L, with a removal ratio of 96%. The chlorophyl was deduced with a reduction ratio of 99%, from 0.648 mg/L to 0.006 mg/L. It was indicated that UV irradiation can inhibit algae growth and control algae blooming finally, while more experimental data are needed for design support.
