Novel proton conductive silica-based hybrid membranes were synthesized from styryl-substituted alkoxysilanes containing different numbers of methoxy groups and phenylvinylphosphonic acid (PhVPA) by radical copolymerization and sol-gel processing. The proton conductivity of the hybrid membranes increased with decreasing inorganic Si-O crosslinking. The membrane from difunctional methyl(dimethoxy)silylmethylstyrene/PhVPA=l/4 showed conductivities of 4.0xl0~(-1) S cm~4 under 100%R.H. at 130°C, and 34xl0~(-3) S cm~(-1) under about 192%R.H. at 130°C.
