Bogota is the capital of Colombia and houses about 7.3 million inhabitants. The city concentrates 16% of the country's population and produces 26.2 percent of the national GDP. Economic standards are above the national average with US$ 7160 GDP per capita. The city has benefited from a sustained national economic growth in the last decade and the increase of foreign direct investment. However, as economic conditions have improved, additional challenges have been posed for transport and city efficiency. While Bogota has a relatively low number of cars (173 cars/1000 hab), motorization has spiked in recent years, growing at an average 10.5 percent rate. This is primarily owed to a decline in the real cost of vehicles, the increased access to credit and improved economic conditions. Moreover, the limited road infrastructure (0.06 Kms/1000 veh) is running at capacity and speeds in major thoroughfares can be under 10 km/hr at peak hours. The increasing size in the private vehicle fleet has become the largest contributor to the worsening mobility conditions in Bogota.
