eBooks to Facilitate Teaching and Evaluating Residents on the Intrinsic CanMEDS Roles

The Postgraduate Medical Office at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa initiated a five-year project to develop and implement a comprehensive system to assess the full spectrum of CanMEDS roles. Interviews with program directors suggested there were prerequisites needed, and preceptors require training in, and support with, understanding what the CanMEDS roles are and how to teach them, before they could expect them to evaluate them. The findings from a needs analysis guided the PGME department to design convenient faculty development to all departments with companion interactive eBooks, on each of the six CanMEDS roles, full of teaching and evaluation resources that can be accessed on mobile devices at the point of care. The eBooks were designed and developed by a collaborative process with subject matter experts, instructional designers, educational experts, computer programmers, videographers and graphic designers. The team approach to the development of the eBooks allowed us to combine the strengths of various professionals and design the most effective resource possible. The eBooks are now available free online. Future work will include assessment of the eBooks to determine their effectiveness in improving resident evaluation.
