Boron removal is gaining world-wide attention in the water treatment community due to its adverse effects both on human/animal health and on agriculture. Polyol compounds and polymers have been used on boron removal based on complexion of multi-hydroxy groups with boric acid. In this report, a multi-hydroxy polymer was grafted on PVDF membrane surface via direct surface-initiated ATRP of a methacrylate sugar monomer, 2-Gluconamidoethyl methacrylate (GAMA). Successful glycosylation of the membrane surface was demonstrated by ATR-FTIR. The variation of grafting yield with the polymerization time was determined by gravimetric method. The resulted affinity membrane showed complexion capacity of 30 μmol/L boron/ g membrane and about 1,000 L/m2/h flux operated at 0.1 Mpa and 25 °C.
