Gastroesophageal reflux in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

The aim of this investigation was to establish pattern of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in patients with COPD..The investigation was performed between June 2007 and June 2008 on 143 consecutive patients with COPD , attending to out patients clinic (Sezana). The diagnosis of COPD and classification of severity was made according to the GOLD ( Global initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) criteria.All patients completed GER questionnaire of the Mayo Clinic. 49 patients with COPD (34% ) had GER symptoms. The greater proportion of COPD patients 29 persons (60%) had significant GER symptoms -:heartburn and / or regruitation once or more per week and dysphagia were present among 8 patients (17%). Among patients with significant GER, 36% reported respiratory symptoms associated with reflux events. The prevalence of patients with GER symptoms increased with the stage of the severity, from 5 patients(14%) among the patients with mild stage of the disease to 19 patients (42%) among the patients with very severe form of the disease.
