The conventional inert gas systems use combustion gases as inert gas (IG) for the tank vapour volumes of the crude oil storage tanks. The combustion gases can origin from steam boilers or from dedicated inert gas Generators. The gas is scrubbed with sea water before being led through inert gas manifold to the tanks. The system works by keeping the oxygen content of the tank atmosphere below the explosion limit. The IG is led to the tanks during offloading of oil to shuttle tankers to replace the volume of the offloaded oil. During normal production with tank oil levels rising the tank atmosphere is vented through vent masts.
