THE USE AND VALIDATION OF OPENFOAM TO DETERMINE THE LATERAL AND LONGITUDINAL FORCES EXERTED ON A VESSEL IN THE LOCK AND IN THE LOCK APPROACH

This paper presents the results of the research conducted at Deltares to estimate the forces on ships caused by density currents at a sea-lock. OpenFOAM calculations are compared with lock-exchange experiments and with static model tests, in which the geometry of a real-life lock and approach harbour and ship model were considered. The results of the comparisons are discussed together with the feasibility of using OpenFOAM for this application.
