(PS11045) Chromium nitride precipitates in large super duplex stainless steel forged components

Duplex and super duplex stainless steels are widely used in the oil & gas industry, in general with good experience. Quality issues have however been experienced from time-to-time, such as substandard mechanical- and corrosion properties due to improper heat treatment practice. While intermetallic precipitation in duplex stainless steels have been given considerable attention over the later years however, the phenomenon of intragranular chromium nitride precipitation appears to have been given less attention. Although generally considered less detrimental than intermetallic precipitates, such nitride precipitation is commonly encountered in heavy wall thickness wrought products following solution heat treatment and may nevertheless have adverse effects on toughness, hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion resistance.
