Laser butt welding of AISi coated Press Hardened Steels - New developments and applications - (PPT)

Combining filler wire addition and partial AlSi coating ablation is mainly useful: (1) When thickness difference is below 0.2 mm to compensate the imperfect cutting quality of sub-blanks; (2) For thin sheets to avoid ferrite transformation during the transfer time between the furnace and the press (average thickness below 1.2 mm); (3) Specific cases where good contact between the blank and the tools are difficult to achieve. Process combining AISi coating ablation and filler wire: - Equipment for welding with filler wire is available in lab for study and demonstrators manufacturing (small volumes) to conduct specific design studies with OEM's; - Process is industrial in North America for door ring applications to manage the gap; - Industrialization is running in Europe.
