Open Simulation Environment for Continuous Use of Simulation Mode

The major challenge in powertrain development today is focused around rapidly shortening vehicle development cycles. To meet this challenge there is a significant need for parallel development of key powertrain components as well as a holistic testing of the powertrain. The position of powertrain testing during the vehicle development has changed dramatically. Significant improvements are achievable today by a holistic approach of optimizing the complete powertrain. Up to now the "road to rig" approach has been reserved for passenger car application. Dynamic and high-dynamic powertrain test beds do exist, where the vehicle can be tested in a virtual environment. Transferring this approach to truck or construction machinery application has some requirements to the test bed design and to the simulation model. This paper describes the basic idea of the layout of a powertrain test bed with an open simulation platform that fulfils the requirements to the oscillation behaviour. This is mandatory for shift quality optimization. Furthermore an open simulation platform offers the user to integrate own, well known simulation models into the control-system of the test bed.
