Global and Local Trends of Grid Intelligence Based on Dynamic Rating Application

The optimisation of network capacity utilisation is becoming increasingly important in an electrical distribution network (EDN) with the variation in load demand due to seasonal changes and uptake of new technologies such as photovoltaics, batteries, electric vehicles and distributed generation. The proliferation in the use of these technologies introduces uncertainties in future load demands and increases the risk of asset stranding. In this paper, the benefits in the application of dynamic rating in an EDN to optimise and evaluate the utilisation of the network assets are highlighted. These benefits include improved forecast for network planning, increased operational information and increased field knowledge for asset management. The paper also investigates and summarises the applications of dynamic rating practiced by networks in New Zealand as well as other parts of the world such as the United Kingdom, United States of America, Asia and Europe. It was found that the use of dynamic rating is increasing and is expected to be used more widely with the proliferation of new technologies as EDN moves toward a smart grid to shape its future.
