Automated diagnostic applications for engineering systems have been developed with a variety of techniques in different domains. The reliability of diagnosis for technical processes is highly improved when the diagnostic system is able to conclude in parallel to the dynamic industrial processes. This paper emphasises in on-line expert systems for fault diagnosis in engineering systems where the main characteristics of the technology, the difficulties and the problems arising in on-line expert systems development, current research trends as well as real time expert systems examples of the last decade have been illustrated. In addition, future directions of the research in these systems are also highlighted.
