Supercapacitors are emerging devices for rapid and highly energy efficient charge storage. The structural aspects of ion electrosorption within the confinement of nanoporous carbon based supercapacitors is difficult to access experimentally. In contrast to batteries, the energy is stored electrostatically utilizing the capacitive behavior of the opposed charges of electrons and ions at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Using in-situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and X-ray transmission (XRT), we studied ion transport and local arrangement within nanopores of carbon supercapacitors during charging and discharging.
