New, specially structured acrylic block copolymer additives have been developed to disperse and stabilize silica matting agents in non-aqueous systems. The additive molecules have been optimized to achieve the highest level of viscosity reduction together with the highest matting efficiency of silica matting agent dispersions, especially in UV crosslinkable binders. The new technology, based on controlled radical polymerization technology, allows to formulate highly filled UV varnishes and coatings with very low gloss and still well acceptable low viscosities. A comparison to "classic" types of wetting agents shows not only improved matting and reduced viscosity, but also much improved anti-settling behavior in coating formulations.
