Syringomyelia (SM) is a condition in which a pathologic accumulation of fluid within the substance of the spinal cord occurs subsequent to changes in CSF flow dynamics. Specifically, changes in CSF pressure and flow velocity can result in the formation of a "syrinx" or syringomyelia in affected patients and is most often seen in dogs with Chiari-like malformation in dogs (CLM). Other causes of syringomyelia include neoplasia, trauma, intevertebral disk disease, and fracture / luxation.
