The conception of a specialty for veterinary surgical technicians occurred in the spring of 2007. Kevin Benson and company realized the need for this type of specialty. They began investigating the process and held an informational meeting at ACVS (American College of Veterinary Surgeons) 2007 symposium. Fairly well attended, the meeting generated a lot of enthusiasm. Kevin asked for interested parties to join the core group that would pursue specialty status. Their efforts culminated with a petitionsubmitted to NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America) in April 2008, for recognition as an Academy. Though denied, the CVTS (Committee of Veterinary Technician Specialties) provided valuable feedback which would prove very useful in the future.
