Many proteins are modular in design, being made up of independently folded domains that have their own individual three-dimensional structures and functional roles. Very often, the regions between protein domains, as well as N- and C- termini, show a high degree of conformational flexibility. Identification of flexible regions and domains within proteins represents an important step in both determination of three-dimensional structures and in defining which parts of proteins carry out particular functions.
