Genome analysis has predicted that leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinases (LRR-RLKs) are the predominant receptor family of plants. The CLE (CLAVATA3/ESR-related) signaling peptide CLV3 binds the CLV1 LRR-RLK specifically in Arabidopsis, regulating stem cell activity in the shoot apical meristem. Legumes encode several LRR-RLKs linked to nodule formation, although their ligands remain unknown. Our aim was to identify putative legume ligands for nodulation-related LRR-RLKs and to test their activities in regulating nodule and related root meristems (lateral root and root apical meristem).
