Subjective Evaluation of the Environmental Performance of Underground Train Stations in Athens; Multi-dimensional Description of Evaluations

Subjective evaluation experiments were carried out in underground train stations of the new 'Metro' network in Athens. Thermal and visual environmental comfort, were explored. A wide range of ordinary passengers and young students were used as assessors. The rating scales were of the bipolar semantic type. Factor analysis of the raw scale judgments produced a small number of independent subjective factors for each perceptual mode tested. Namely, ATTRACTIVENESS / SUBTLETY, SUBJECTIVE BRIGHTNESS, and COMPLEXITY, for the visual environment, SUBJECTIVE TEMPERATURE, SUBJECTIVE FRESHNESS OF AIR, and SUBJECTIVE HUMIDITY, for the thermal environment. The present study illuminates some of the ways a wide cross section of underground train passengers, describe their experience of been exposed to the environmental conditions of the underground transport enclosure.
