We examined a communication system (i-HR system) using heart rate (HR) response for real-time communication between people with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) and other people. As described herein, we included a new function of monitoring respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) by the HR power spectrum in the system. We hypothesized that responses of individuals with SMID are better when RSA appears. The i-HR system's experimental use with four participants confirmed the hypothesis and showed the possibility of the new function.
