Mobile University Notification System: A Jabber-based Notification System for Educational Institutions

This research has been carried out to develop a system for communication of notification messages among lecturers and students in educational institutions. The system has two criteria; firstly, it conveys announcement messages to students' mobile phones, and secondly, incurs a lower message delivery cost as compared to short messaging service (SMS). We developed the system using Jabber protocol; distributed client-server architecture to ensure that the notification messages are conveyed at nearly real time. We also performed a cost analysis and found out that our proposed system will actually cost lesser than SMS.
