Road traffic noise is known to increase the risk for the occurrence of arterial hypertension in adults. However, the results of investigations on noise - blood pressure relationship in children are less consistent. This association was found to be positive and significant for both systolic and diastolic pressure, positive and significant for systolic pressure only, negative and significant for systolic pressure, and negative and non-significant. The inconsistencies in the results may be related to different age of children, usage of daytime noise levels at home and/or school instead of the total daily noise exposure of children, and possibly different socio-demographic status. Furthermore, no similar study has been conducted in Serbia previously. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of urban road-traffic daytime noise around schools and nighttime noise near residences on blood pressure of school children aged 7-11.
