Recent Movement on Japan's Ocean Technology Policy

Following the enforcement of the Basic Act on Ocean Policy in July, 2007, a national committee on general maritime policies headed by the Prime Minister was established with a view to intensively and comprehensively promoting maritime policies. Under this Act, the Basic Ocean Plan has been approved in a Cabinet meeting. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology decided to establish a new department at the University of Tokyo in this stream. These movements on Japan's ocean technology policy are outlined in this paper. In addition, a recommendation on Japan's strategy of ocean development and utilization by the Forum on Ocean Technology is introduced.
