Sempra LNG and Shell International Gas are constructing an LNG receiving terminal at Costa Azul in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The marine portion of the Costa Azul LNG Project includes an offshore detached breakwater protecting a trestle-supported berth and approach causeway. This paper focuses on several coastal engineering challenges in the design of the approach causeway and the interfaces with the intake pipe system and the trestle piles. The preliminary causeway design was developed based on empirical methods and the results of the comprehensive numerical model studies. To confirm and optimize the design, both 2D and 3D physical models were performed. The optimized final design is currently under construction.
