THE REPRODUCIBILITY OF A SCC MIX DEVELOPED USING REGIONAL WESTERN CAPE MATERIALS

Self compacting concrete has been used on a very limited scale in South Africa. SCC is more sensitive to the variability of materials and water/cement ratio than standard concrete. The reproducibility of an SCC mix is of vital importance and was intensively studied by a pan-European group to provide typical test values for SCC in a report published in 2005 [1]. They concluded that target values are strongly dependent on the specific application and/or site requirements. It is therefore important to conduct reproducibility tests with local materials and under local conditions. Local materials were sourced and a 30 MPa SCC mix was designed using standard practices. The European standards [2] were used and slump flow, J-ring flow spread, V-funnel, Sieve segregation, LCPC box tests (Roussel) [3] as well as 7 and 28 day compressive strength tests were conducted. The optimised mix was produced and tested 20 times over a period of 10 days. The reproducibility of the test results were consistently higher when compared to the tests reported in [1], although the results conformed to the European guidelines for SCC [2] and was successfully used in an underpinning application.
