IL1RN Allele 3 as a protective Factor in Bronchial Asthma in Bulgarian Population

The aim of the current case-control study was to investigate whether the VNTR polymorphism ofIL1RN gene is associated with the development of Bronchial asthma (BA) in Bulgarian population. Thegenotyping of 47 patients with BA and 170 non-affected by the disease control individuals for IL1RNpolymorphism was performed by PCR-based assay. We did not observed statistically significant differences ingenotype and allele frequencies of IL1RN polymorphism between controls and patients with asthma (p=0,511and p=0.378). However, the very rare five-repeat allele (allele *3) and the three-repeat allele (allele *4) weredetected only in controls (10/340 for allele *3, and 1/340 for allele *4). Thus, the carriers of IL1RN allele *3containing genotypes appeared to have 7.09-fold lower risk for BA than those homozygous of the most commonIL1RN allele *1 (OR=0.141, 95% CI: 0.024-0.848, p=0.033). Based on the results of the current study wesuggest that VNTR polymorphism of IL1RN gene may participate in defining the biological basis ofpredisposition to BA.
